| Michelangelo Antonioni was honored by the Academy in 1994 with an Honorary Oscar “in recognition of his place as one of cinema’s master visual stylists.” This Academy Salute will celebrate the legend of Antonioni, even as it welcomes the director to Los Angeles for a rare in-person appearance. And the feature film chosen for this evening is itself a rarity -- this screening marks the first public showing of The Passenger in nearly three decades. Jack Nicholson, in perhaps his subtlest performance, stars as a burned-out reporter sent to North Africa to cover local guerilla fighters. His decision to change identities with a corpse he discovers in a hotel room leads not to the clean slate he longs for, but to a world full of danger. The Passenger is a visual masterpiece, and an enigmatic and engrossing viewing experience. Cast: Jack Nicholson, Maria Schneider, Jenny Runacre, Ian Hendry, Stephen Berkoff, Ambroise Bia, Jose Maria Cafarel, James Campbell, Manfred Spies, Jean Baptiste Tiemele, Angel Del Pozo, Chuck Mulvehill. Director Michelangelo Antonioni; Producer Carlo Ponti; Original Story Mark Peploe; Screenplay Mark Peploe, Peter Wollen, Michelangelo Antonioni; Executive Producer Alessandro von Normann; Director of Photography Luciano Tovoli, A.I.C.; Print courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics; 35mm; 123 mins; 1975. This Academy salute is presented in association with the Film Department of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Italian Cultural Institute and Cinecittá Holding.
