Crete, one of the sites of this summer's Olympic Games, can be
seen through the eyes of Alexis Zorba when the Best Picture nominee
Zorba the Greek screens on Monday, August 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Presented as part of the Academy's monthly screening series "Monday
Nights with Oscar®," the 1964 Academy Award®-winning
drama will celebrate its 40th anniversary when it's shown at the
Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.
Zorba the Greek starred Anthony Quinn in the title role,
a performance that earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. The
film tells the story of how an introverted Englishman, played by
Alan Bates, comes to Greece and learns the importance of living
life to the fullest.
Lila Kedrova, who played the dying prostitute Madame Hortense,
won the Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in the film.
Additional Academy Award wins included Art Direction (Black-and-White)
and Cinematography (Black-and-White).
Producer-director Michael Cacoyannis received three Academy Award
nominations for his work on Zorba the Greek – Directing,
Best Picture and Writing (Screenplay -- based on material from another
medium).
The Oscar-winning Cartoon Short Subject of 1964, The Pink Phink,
also will be shown during the program.
