Co-presented by the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, in conjunction with their weekend conference “Science Fiction Los Angeles: Words and World Building in the City of Angels.”
The Academy’s screening of Her kicks off the conference “Science Fiction Los Angeles” with an introduction by architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne on the architectural settings and moods of science fiction films set in L.A. and Southern California.
An unconventional love story between a personalized letter writer, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), and a computer operating system, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), Her examines our fascination with artificial intelligence while at the same time thoughtfully touching upon the continuing need for human connection and intimacy. Building upon many of the themes explored in his 2010 short film I’m Here, Her’s writer-director-producer Spike Jonze showcases a unique vision of the not-too-distant future as a “beautiful pop world.”
Production designer K.K. Barrett was able to bring this concept to fruition by digitally melding together the skyline of Los Angeles with that of the Pudong District, near Shanghai, creating a new and distinctive image of the city. Jonze won an Academy Award for Original Screenplay for Her, his first solo screenwriting effort for a feature film, and the film was nominated for an additional four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Production Design.
