Wake Up! - David C. Lee Photographs the Films of Spike Lee

Coinciding with the Academy’s Spike Lee retrospective and the 25th anniversary celebration of Do the Right Thing – Lee’s explosive portrait of racial tensions that arise in a small Brooklyn ’hood over the course of one hot summer day – is an exhibit exploring powerful on-set photography by David C. Lee, Spike’s brother. David has photographed nearly every one of Spike Lee’s films, beginning with his first feature, She’s Gotta Have It (1986), up through 2012’s Red Hook Summer – an extraordinary collaboration over nearly three decades.

In addition to his work with Spike, David Lee has been the on-set photographer for many other feature films including King of the Hill (1993), Far from Heaven (2002), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), American Gangster (2007) and Admission (2013), and television programs including the first season of HBO’s series The Wire (2002).

The “WAKE UP!” exhibit, named for a phrase that Spike has used in several films as a call to action, features David’s photographs from the sets of 17 of Spike’s films. Showcased along with the director are many of his key performers and collaborators, including Danny Aiello, Halle Berry, Adrien Brody, Ossie Davis, Rosario Dawson, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito, Jodie Foster, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Harvey Keitel, John Leguizamo, Delroy Lindo, Lonette McKee, Edward Norton, Rosie Perez, Wesley Snipes, John Turturro, Denzel Washington, Damon Wayans and Alfre Woodard.

Work from David’s acclaimed fine arts portfolio has been shown at the Museum of the City of New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Boston University’s Photographic Resource Center. David was also included in “Songs of My People,” a group show of works from 50 African-American photographers that has traveled internationally.
