In “Freeze Frame,” 125 color and black-and-white photographs by acclaimed Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland represent a literal “who’s who” of the film world of the last half-century. This exhibition showcased images of such classic and current screen stars as Audrey Hepburn, Robert Redford and Nicole Kidman as well as such behind-the-camera luminaries as Ingmar Bergman and Oliver Stone.
Born in Toronto in 1934, Kirkland spent much of his early professional life working in New York before relocating to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. At age 24 he landed a staff position at Look magazine, where he worked primarily on fashion assignments. It was on his way back from one of those assignments that he was asked to accompany a writer to interview Elizabeth Taylor, even though the actress had already refused to be photographed. Kirkland managed to convince Taylor to become his first celebrity subject, and the resulting photos gave his career a powerful new trajectory.
Through the years, Kirkland has worked on the sets of more than 100 motion pictures – from period dramas to musicals – that include such Best Picture Oscar® winners as “Out of Africa” and “Titanic.” Kirkland also has published several books of photography, exhibited his work in galleries throughout the world, and traveled on assignment to every continent except Antarctica.
Other film personalities depicted in “Freeze Frame” include, from the 1960s – Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Akira Kurosawa, Peter Sellers and Paul Newman; from the 1970s – Warren Beatty, Donald Sutherland, Jeanne Moreau, John Wayne, Jack Nicholson and Francis Ford Coppola; from the 1980s – Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline; from the 1990s – Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Shirley MacLaine, Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Sidney Poitier and Arnold Schwarzenegger; and from the 2000s – Baz Luhrmann, Ewan McGregor, Renée Zellweger, Jessica Alba, Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson.
