From Amarcord to Z

Since 2000, photographer Vince Gonzales has been capturing a unique side of the artifacts of motion picture technology: their beauty as objects. While most may see merely function – a microphone, a splicer, a projector – Gonzales uncovers dramatic shapes, distinctive textures and colors, hidden details of craftsmanship and design; in short, the remarkable aesthetics of these otherwise forgotten machines of the trade.

This exhibition, presented by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council, showcased more than 30 of Gonzales’s best photographs from his ongoing exploration of filmmaking technology as art.
