Essential Restorations: Four Classics from the Academy Film Archive
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Academy are partnering for a special weekend devoted to the Academy’s restorations of four films, three of which are on TIFF’s Essential 100 list. Each screening will be followed by a presentation and discussion with Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski on the unique challenges each film posed to the restoration teams.
Saturday, October 16
TIFF presents one of the first films to be restored by the Satyajit Ray Preservation Project at the Academy Film Archive, with funding from The Film Foundation, “Pather Panchali” (1955), and the project’s most recent restoration, “The Chess Players” (1977).
Sunday, October 17
TIFF presents the 2003 restoration of F.W. Murnau’s “Sunrise” (1927) and Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon” (1950), which was digitally restored in 2008 through an international collaboration.
