The Rose (1979)

A 30th anniversary screening of “The Rose” (1979)

Hosted by Los Angeles Times film critic Betsy Sharkey
With special guests director Mark Rydell, Oscar-nominated actor Frederic Forrest, actors Barry Primus and Doris Roberts, songwriter Amanda McBroom and Oscar-nominated sound mixer Theodore Soderbergh.

Oscar-nominated actress Bette Midler was originally scheduled to participate in the event, but had to cancel for personal reasons. Instead, she provided a special video message dedicated to the cast, crew and fans of the film.

The tour-de-force performance of Bette Midler, as a self-destructive rock star in the vein of Janis Joplin, anchors this musical film and earned Midler her first Academy Award® nomination for Best Actress. Set in 1969, the film follows singer Mary Rose Foster (“The Rose”) on her final tour, through numerous highs (both figurative and literal) and lows, and features several electric concert performances. The title song by Amanda McBroom has become a classic; both Alan Bates and Oscar® nominee Frederic Forrest deliver outstanding supporting performances.

Cast Bette Midler (Rose), Alan Bates (Rudge), Frederic Forrest (Dyer), Harry Dean Stanton (Billy Ray), Barry Primus (Dennis), David Keith (Mal), Sandra McCabe (Sarah), Will Hare (Mr. Leonard), Rudy Bond (Monty), Don Calfa (Don Frank), James Keane (Dealer), Doris Roberts (Rose’s Mother).
