Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Washington, D.C.)
A 70th anniversary screening
The Academy, in partnership with The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film, presented a screening of Frank Capra’s classic 1939 film “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” which had its premiere on October 17, 1939, at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains and Thomas Mitchell, the film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards® and won for Writing (Original Story).
The screening of a pristine 35mm print from the Academy Film Archive was introduced by special guest Robert Osborne, film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Running time: 129 minutes.
