This does not include previews and advertising films, sequences from feature-length film such as credits sequences or sections of compilations, unaired episodes of established TV series, unsold TV series pilots or other similar works.

Oscars are awarded for Best Animated Short and Best Live Action Short.

An animated documentary may be submitted in either the Animated Short category or the Short Subject Documentary category but not both. Documentaries are NOT accepted in the Live Action Short category.

Short Film Qualifying Festival List

The Short Film and Feature Animation Branch honors the very best live action and animated short films.  Because film festivals are a magnet for new and innovative works, and because festivals are an important venue for screening short films in a theatrical setting, awards granted by the festivals on this list may qualify short films for Academy award consideration.  To be eligible, films that win a qualifying festival award or a Student Academy Award must also meet all the other requirements listed in the Short Film Awards rules.
