Executives Branch Membership Requirements

From Academy Bylaws:

Article III, Section 1. Membership shall be by invitation of the Board of Governors. Invitations to active membership shall be limited to those persons employed by motion picture producing companies, or credited with screen achievements, or who have otherwise achieved distinction in their respective fields of endeavor within the industry and who, in the opinion of the Board, are qualified for membership.

The Academy considers for membership executives who function in high-level management positions of organizations producing and distributing theatrical motion pictures. Although job titles may vary from company to company, a proposed member should hold one of the following key positions of authority:

  • CEO
  • Head of Production (Creative)
  • Head of Domestic Distribution
  • Head of International Distribution
  • Head of Animation

A candidate should have held a qualifying position (or a series of such positions) for three years before being considered for membership.

In addition, the organization at which the candidate has achieved the qualifying position should be a company which has been producing and releasing pictures domestically for the most recent three years, and has released at least three theatrical features (two for Animated features) during that span. (In case of new companies, no more than one executive will be considered in any one Academy year for membership for the first seven years of the company's existence.)

The branch Executive Committee shall determine eligibility in accordance with the above guidelines.

The proposed executive's standing in and contributions to the motion picture industry must reflect the high standards of the Academy.
