DAVID LEAN WINS BEST DIRECTOR

Joan Crawford presents David Lean his Best Director Oscar for “Lawrence of Arabia” at the 35th Academy Awards.

The U.S. premiere of the film’s 50th anniversary digital restoration will be held at the Academy Thursday, July 19.


LAWRENCE OF ARABIA BEHIND THE SCENES

This behind-the-scenes shot from the Oscar-winning classic “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), which turns 50 this year, features star Peter O’Toole (center) who got the role after it was originally offered to Marlon Brando and Albert Finney. The new restoration of the film will make its U.S. debut at the Academy on July 19.

BERNARD HERRMANN AND RAY HARRYHAUSEN

One of the films both Bernard Herrmann and Ray Harryhausen worked on was “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963). This lobby card features Jason (Todd Armstrong) fighting off the seven-headed Hydra.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND BERNARD HERRMANN

One of Hollywood’s most famous director/composer teams was Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann, whose birthday is today. In this gag photo from the production of “The Man Who Knew Too Much” (1956), Herrmann had good reason to be tired he also appeared in the film conducting during the famous Royal Albert Hall assassination scene.

Before he won an Oscar this year for “The Artist,” costume designer Mark Bridges already had plenty of experience with period clothing.
