The 75th Anniversary Academy Awards turned out unlike anything
anyone could have imagined.
After the usual preceding few months of publicity and promotion,
the brakes were applied five days before show time.
Instead of the glitter of a diamond anniversary, the awards went
tentatively forward in the face of munitions raining down on the
desert dictatorship of Iraq - by show night almost on Baghdad's
doorstep.
The red carpet was shortened to just a few yards, most of the world's
press was disinvited, the fans were nowhere to be found and hundreds
of thousands of viewers stayed glued to the night-vision green glow
of wall-to-wall live cable coverage of Gulf War II.
The show, when it went on air on schedule (to audible sighs of
relief throughout the town, from the Academy staff and production
crew to studio publicists and Hollywood journalists) received high
praise for hitting just the right tone, for enjoyment value and
for ending the same day it started, even on the east coast, as the
president had promised at the nomination announcements.
